(Context):
(UPSC GS Paper 3)

📌 Context of the Launch:
Union Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan kicked off the nationwide ‘Khet Bachao Abhiyan-Rabi 2026’ from Karnal, Haryana today. The campaign, which will run intensively until November 30, is designed to promote sustainable agriculture, optimize soil health, and ensure the judicious use of resources during the crucial transition into the Rabi cropping season.
🌾 Campaign Objectives & Implementation Strategy
Thematic Area Key Interventions & Targets
Resource Management Promoting the balanced and judicious use of fertilizers strictly based on scientific soil testing.
Crop Diversification Encouraging shifts toward oilseeds, pulses, and horticulture, and ensuring the effective utilization of fallow fields post-paddy harvest.
Ecological Farming Training farmers in the appropriate use of organic/bio-based agricultural products and scaling up natural farming techniques.
Institutional Outreach Joint deployment of Agriculture Departments, Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), ICAR institutes, and agricultural universities down to the Gram Panchayat level.
🌱 Key Highlights of the Grassroots Outreach:
  • Tackling Crop Residue: Launching the campaign from Karnal (Haryana) is highly strategic, as the initiative heavily focuses on proper crop residue management to combat the annual stubble burning crisis during the Kharif-to-Rabi transition.
  • Community Engagement: The government will directly engage farmers through Kisan Chaupals, targeted training sessions, farmers’ conferences, and live field demonstrations across blocks and districts.
  • Multi-Media Awareness: To maximize public outreach, Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) activities will be broadcast via local-language materials, Radio, Doordarshan, and social media platforms.
  • Alignment with Viksit Bharat: The overarching goal of the Khet Bachao Abhiyan is to lower input costs, enhance water and soil conservation, and ultimately secure the long-term economic prosperity of the farming community.
💡 Sustainable Agriculture & Environmental Ecology (UPSC GS Paper 3)

The 'Khet Bachao Abhiyan-Rabi 2026' touches upon multiple core themes of GS Paper 3 (Agriculture and Environment). By launching in Haryana and emphasizing Crop Residue Management, the Centre is proactively addressing the National Capital Region's (NCR) air pollution crisis caused by paddy stubble burning. Furthermore, the push for soil testing-based fertilizer use aims to combat soil alkalization and groundwater contamination (improving NPK ratios), while leveraging KVKs and ICAR institutes highlights the crucial role of robust Agricultural Extension Services in bridging the lab-to-land gap.
