International Affairs & Aviation: Flydubai Cockpit Altercation & Diplomatic Coordination
02 Oct 2026
A Flydubai flight was diverted to Saudi Arabia following a mid-air physical altercation where the co-pilot assaulted Captain Smit Machchhar. Through swift Saudi-UAE coordination, both pilots were transferred to Abu Dhabi.
A Flydubai aircraft carrying 174 passengers was forced to make an emergency landing at Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. The diversion occurred due to an unprecedented mid-air altercation where the co-pilot physically assaulted the pilot-in-command, Captain Smit Machchhar.
- Passenger & Flight Safety: Despite the severe breach of cockpit protocol, the aircraft landed safely. Passengers were provided logistical support and later continued their journey on a replacement Flydubai aircraft.
- Medical & Security Intervention: Both pilots sustained injuries and were immediately taken to a local hospital in Saudi Arabia for medical evaluation. Following preliminary investigations by Saudi authorities, a UAE security team escorted them to Abu Dhabi.
- Consular Support: The Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi actively monitored the situation and confirmed that Captain Machchhar had been successfully brought to the UAE and is recovering well.
This incident underscores critical vulnerabilities in commercial aviation security, particularly regarding crew mental health and cockpit resource management. The swift resolution highlights the effectiveness of bilateral diplomatic and security coordination between Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Indian consular services in ensuring the safety and swift repatriation of involved nationals.
