Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman addressed the Qatari Businessmen Association in Doha, highlighting India's record $94.5 billion FDI and accelerating talks on a $10-billion investment commitment, BIT, and FTA.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman addressed a business roundtable of the Qatari Businessmen Association in Doha. During her visit, she also held high-level discussions with Qatar’s Minister of State for Foreign Trade, Dr. Ahmad bin Mohammed Al-Sayed, aiming to deepen bilateral economic ties and attract sovereign wealth investments.
- Record FDI & Economic Growth: Showcasing India as a premier investment destination, the Finance Minister highlighted the record gross FDI inflow of over $94.5 billion in FY 2025-26 and the recent upgrade of India’s long-term issuer rating by Japan Credit Rating.
- $10-Billion Commitment & QIA Office: The two sides discussed the active implementation of Qatar’s $10-billion investment commitment. A major milestone will be the establishment of a Qatar Investment Authority (QIA) office in India to streamline capital flows.
- Accelerated Trade Pacts: Both nations agreed to expedite ongoing negotiations for a Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT) and a Free Trade Agreement (FTA), targeting sectors like infrastructure, food security, pharmaceuticals, petrochemicals, and start-ups.
- Maritime Security (Strait of Hormuz): Addressing geopolitical realities, Ms. Sitharaman stressed the critical importance of restoring normal trade with Gulf countries, specifically calling for unimpeded maritime navigation and commerce through the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
India’s diplomatic outreach in Doha perfectly aligns its domestic infrastructure needs with Gulf sovereign wealth. By pushing for a physical QIA presence in India and expediting the BIT, New Delhi is ensuring institutionalized capital flows. Simultaneously, highlighting the Strait of Hormuz underlines India's strategic reliance on secure maritime chokepoints for uninterrupted energy and trade supplies.
