Economy & Banking: PSBs and RRBs to Remain Open on Sunday Ahead of Strike
27 Sep 2026
To mitigate the impact of the upcoming 3-day nationwide bank strike called by UFBU, the Finance Ministry and RBI have mandated all Public Sector Banks and RRBs to remain operational on Sunday, with a waiver on ATM transaction charges.
The Finance Ministry has announced that all Public Sector Banks (PSBs) and Regional Rural Banks (RRBs) will remain fully operational this Sunday. This preemptive step is designed to ensure customer convenience ahead of the proposed three-day nationwide bank strike called by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) from September 28th to 30th.
- RBI Approval for Operations: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has granted special approval for all bank branches, administrative offices, ATM-linked branches, and Currency Chests to remain open and fully functional on Sunday to manage the anticipated cash demand.
- Mitigating Long Closures: The strike coincides with the preceding weekend holidays (September 26th and 27th). Operating on Sunday effectively breaks a potential five-day continuous shutdown of banking services, preventing severe economic disruption.
- Waiver of ATM Charges: In a significant relief to the public, several public sector banks have decided to waive ATM transaction charges for withdrawals exceeding the free monthly limit during the three-day strike period.
Uninterrupted banking services are critical for maintaining the fluidity of the economy, especially for MSMEs and daily wage earners who rely heavily on liquidity. The prompt intervention by the Finance Ministry and RBI highlights robust contingency planning to secure macroeconomic stability and prevent panic withdrawals during prolonged industrial actions.
