(Context):

📌 Context of the Meeting:
External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar co-chaired the 19th session of the India-Vietnam Joint Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific and Technological Cooperation in New Delhi alongside Vietnam’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Le Hoai Trung. The meeting aimed to review commitments and translate political momentum into tangible outcomes under the Enhanced Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
🤝 Key Highlights of the Joint Commission:
  • Vision MAHASAGAR & Act East: Dr. Jaishankar emphasized Vietnam’s role as a core partner in India's 'Act East Policy', 'Vision MAHASAGAR', and the broader Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative.
  • Defence & Security Collaboration: Both sides identified pathways for deepening security ties, specifically focusing on the co-production of Indian defence items to strengthen mutual strategic autonomy.
  • Economic & Sectoral Expansion: Discussions prioritized expanding trade, securing mutually beneficial supply chains, expanding market access for Indian marine, agricultural, and pharmaceutical products, and exploring opportunities in nuclear energy and space.
  • Year of Friendship: To commemorate a historic milestone, both nations agreed to observe next year as the 'Year of India-Vietnam Friendship', marking 55 years of formal diplomatic ties rooted in deep civilisational linkages.
🌊 Securing the Indo-Pacific Architecture

Vietnam is a critical geopolitical counterweight in Southeast Asia. By advancing from defense procurement to joint 'co-production' and integrating Vietnam into the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative, India is actively securing maritime supply chains (Vision MAHASAGAR) and ensuring a multipolar, rules-based order in the fiercely contested Indo-Pacific region.
