EAM S. Jaishankar and Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal addressed the BRICS Business Forum in New Delhi, advocating for resilient supply chains, local currency trade, UPI integration, and the launch of the BRICS Startup Innovation Fund.
Marking 20 years of institutionalized cooperation, the BRICS Business Forum commenced in New Delhi under India's chairship theme: "Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability". EAM Dr. S. Jaishankar and Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal addressed the gathering, emphasizing the need to translate BRICS' massive economic strength (40% of global GDP) into tangible prosperity amid global geopolitical uncertainties.
- Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) & UPI: Highlighting India's UPI success (over 250 billion annual transactions, accepted in 11 countries), Piyush Goyal urged BRICS nations to link payment systems and promote trade in local currencies to build resilient financial networks.
- Innovation & Startups: To strengthen the entrepreneurial ecosystem, India announced the BRICS Incubator Network and the BRICS Startup Innovation Fund, designed to foster innovation-driven entrepreneurship across member states.
- Trade Diversification & Services: MoS Jitin Prasada stressed balancing trade and increasing the share of digital services and AI, ensuring technological deployment translates into job creation and benefits for MSMEs.
- Global Economic Engine: Russian Minister Maksim Reshetnikov reaffirmed that the bloc, now representing a quarter of global trade, serves as a powerful voice for a sustainable future, green transition, and diversified supply chains.
The push for linking national payment systems and trading in local currencies marks a significant step toward financial autonomy and gradual de-dollarization for the Global South. By exporting its successful DPI (like UPI) and establishing the Startup Innovation Fund, India is positioning itself as the technological and economic anchor of the expanded BRICS bloc.
