Economy & Resources: Rajya Sabha Takes Up Mines and Minerals (Amendment) Bill, 2026
13 Aug 2026
The Rajya Sabha has taken up the MMDR Amendment Bill 2026 to make India's mining sector more efficient, investment-friendly, and capable of meeting the growing demand for critical minerals.
Economy & Resources: Rajya Sabha Takes Up Mines and Minerals (Amendment) Bill 2026
The Rajya Sabha has taken up the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026 for consideration and passage. Union Coal and Mines Minister G. Kishan Reddy moved the Bill, which seeks to further amend the archaic provisions of the MMDR Act, 1957.
⛏️ Key Highlights & Objectives of the Bill:
- Boosting Efficiency & Investment: The primary aim of the legislation is to thoroughly modernize India’s mining sector, making it significantly more efficient and investment-friendly to attract global and domestic capital.
- Focus on Critical Minerals: Recognizing the shifting global supply chains, the bill is specifically designed to equip the country to fulfill its rapidly growing demand for critical minerals (essential for EVs, renewable energy, and advanced electronics).
- Central Regulation: Through this Bill, the Centre also seeks to bring under its control the regulation of mineral-bearing lands having specific mineral contents, adhering strictly to the parameters prescribed under the MMDR Act framework.
🇮🇳 Securing India's Resource Independence
As the global economy transitions towards green technology, securing a steady supply of critical minerals is a matter of national security. Streamlining mining regulations and empowering the Centre to regulate key mineral-bearing lands will reduce import dependencies and accelerate India's journey towards self-reliance (Atmanirbhar Bharat) in strategic sectors.
